Community gallery Real Tart will expand its support to artists on the other side of the world after accepting an international award at its opening last week.
A shared exhibition with artists from Taranaki and Port Moody in British Columbia will go on-line in August at the Virtual Tart website.
It follows the New Plyouth gallery' official opening on Friday, when Real Tart co-founder and artist Dale Copeland announced the two cities had started the Cities-of-Art International Accord.
It was established after two visiting Canadian artists gave Copeland a lapel badge that said Port Moody, City of the Arts.
"That was enough to start an international comparison of cities as places which honour and support their artistic community. And that comparison has led to this award," Copeland said.
Although cities such as Paris, Florence and New York were famous for their art history, it was almost impossible for the local artists to hold an exhibition in their home city. Many overseas artists had commented that they were envious of the support artists in Taranaki received. It was hoped more cities and towns would be included in the Accord, but they would be selected by artists.
"As more cities apply to be accepted into this accord, the opportunities for artists can only expand," Copeland aid.
The on-line exhibition would include 15 artists from each city, then Taranaki artists would also feature in a shared exhibition at the Blackberry Gallery in Port Moody next year.
