Artist Statement

I began to take pictures of the multiple local construction sites with the intention of developing a historical digital construction process with respect to this urban development.

I then decided to engage in a photographic documentary with a play on the words from Construction "Boom" to "Bloom", partly influenced by my experience as a floral artist.

Why the introduction of flowers?

Flowers represent the balance and growth. They stand for some degree of equilibrium. Perhaps the hope for balance of growth and progress with the beauty and harmony of new neighbors and neighborhoods.

The flowers also represent the beauty of art.

I do not intend to say what is good or bad for Port Moody. Port Moody Construction Bloom is not a judgment of past or f uture development, it only reflects a snapshot of a moment in time. I do hope, however, to trigger discussion of this rapid development.

  Bio Carolyn Sullivan
I am compelled to use photography because of it's historical use in documenting social and political issues worldwide, and my artwork is propelled by and centers around such issues.
My recent works are influenced by the social, political and economic issues surrounding the rapid and expansive growth and urban change within Greater Vancouver.
As a visual artist and designer I am strongly drawn to the colors, lines and the other foundation elements of art.
For the past twenty years I have been an exhibiting my photography , solo shows as well in group shows.
I was trained in Photography and having worked for many years with a 4 X 5 camera as a commercial photographer.
Today I photograph all images on a digital camera , then assemble, manipulate and blend in Photoshop.
I love the challenge of combining photos and working on the edge of the technologies of the day. My photographic layered images ( collage images) stemmed from a collection of photographs with which I could not enlarge due to the lack of technology in the day, but was able to blend and compile into one large image.
